Hi there Ken, Thank you again for your very comprehensive and closely argued response. Everything you say is valid. I suppose it all points up the very different times and experiences that war brings forth. Thank you also for your confirmation from the book index of the absence of a mention of the locality. The vast majority of Cape Wrath was then unoccupied. The only persons prese

Hi there Bruce, Thank you for your response. On checking my notes I find that I last spoke to the retired police officer over four years ago, but his memory was clear at that time. An eye-witness to a U-boat landing would surely defeat the object of clandestine operations? The only persons present on the far reaches of Cape Wrath were the occasional shepherds. An uninhabited Cape Wra

Hi there David, Thank you for your response. Your candidate seems just about spot on. Many thanks. Mention of it being a survey vessel is, again, attractive. Loch Laxford is a tidal sea loch. The far north-western coast of Sutherland was surveyed in detail towards the end of the 19th century following the first somewhere near accurate marine survey of circa 1850-60. Even now the o

Hi all, I have an old photograph captioned "HMS Research in Laxford Bay". The only vessel of that name I have been able to identify (via wikipedia = )) is that launched in August 1863 and broken up during 1884. I suppose the original of the photograph just could have been taken as far back as the second half of the 19th century, but the actual photo reproduction was issued duri

Hi there Ken, Many thanks for your response. I am confident that there is some element of truth in this folk memory. I have contacted the police officer stationed in Durness during the war years and he is adamant that he handled some of the offending communications equipment. But a blanket of secrecy descended once it was transferred from the safekeeping of the civil authorities to t

Hi everyone, I have a passionate interest in Cape Wrath, at the very north-westernmost tip of the British mainland, and indeed I spend all summer there. I have recently completed a social and historical survey of the Cape Wrath peninsula, upon which there was a wartime observation and radio reporting station (using the former Lloyds marine insurers radio station premises operative from 1905

Thanks everyone. Responses so far confirm the identity of the vessel coming alongside U-826 as U-293 in Admiralty photo A.28528. And they confirm that U-293 did surrender to Loch Eriboll and did not therefore sail direct to Loch Ailsh as quoted in the published histories. Appropriate amendments have been made to my records. Sincere thanks again.

Hi Paul, I am currently researching U-boat surrenders to Loch Eriboll in May 1945. I have identified 32 individual vessels so far but I am sure the list is incomplete. And there are anomalies. U-236 is evidently pictured in official Admiralty photographs released for issue on 12 May, whereas all the reference lists say this vessel was damaged in an aircraft attack on 4 May and scuttled the

Hi there, Sorry for the delay in responding - new member. U-1009 was evidently the first U-boat to surrender in Loch Eriboll, on 10 May 1945. Other data as in earlier forum responses. I have a photograph of U-1009 under arrest in Loch Eriboll, displaying the black surrender flag. The photo also shows the frigate HMS BYRON (K 508). You also mention U-1109. I also have a (not ver
