i had heard about heydrich...how may the world have been differnet if he had continued with his naval career? wonder if the more humane influence of a fellow like donitz would have rubbed off on him? wasn't aware of the other fellow...but a fist fight over a girl seems like a small matter to send a man into combat over...maybe something less extreme like making him spend his leave time i

i know that several uboat officers got into trouble for their dealings with the fairer sex before the war, but did any find themselves in hot water with bdu or okw during the war for their, um, social activities?

translated into english, with the original german also available, on uboatarchives.net. an interesting read...this is the patrol that buchheim went on. when they get the message about the run to gibraltar, the comment in the ktb seems to be to be the definition of sarcasm: new patrol assignment received with enthusiasm. and as buchheim indicated in the novel, hlw was a master of understatemen

hi volker! how was your trip to colorado? i quite agree that peterson made the right choices in going with a german cast, and jp was very well cast; his performance is very impressive. i was just speculating about american actors who would have fit the role...and robert redford just doesn't. spencer tracy did, i think...and so did walter huston, and for the same reasons: a less than m

i was channel surfing not long ago, and i came across a movie from the 30's with jean harlow and spencer tracy. and as i watched, i started thinking, spencer tracy! of course! he'd have been the perfect american actor to play hlw...both blue eyed redheads, not matinee idol handsome but posessed of a personal intensity which is very compelling, the ability to project a very sympatheti

he seems almost chameleon-like to me. there are some wartime photos of him where he does look rather older than his years, but there are others where, to me at least, he looks very youthful. i've also seen a photo of him taken some years after the war where he looks very well preserved, graying at the temples but looking quite vigorous and not too weathered, in spite of making a life at se
