The text as written is a strange mix of Dutch and German (and also English if "For" is really written as "for" in the original. Omwisseling (notice the different spelling) is Dutch for exchange of two items/people/... Without knowing the context, I would describe the event as: An ill person was transferred for getting medical care and another person came on board as a re

Owner maybe, driver no. His rank (Oberleutnant zur See) is too low.

While not totally impossible, it seems very highly unlikely. Cremer / Kremer / Kraemer are reasonably common names around here (Flanders & The Netherlands - and previously also in north west France, which used to be a dutch speaking area. They just mean "merchant". Today we still use the word martkramer to designate people who constantly travel from one local market to anothe

Nice. But the translation is often far from correct when using the German original as a reference (wow, I discovered by reading this transcript that I more or less know the whole German dialogue by heart). Does anyone have that original version written down?

The mission was to sink cargo ships. Every torpedo fired against an escort is one that can't sink a larger and more valuable freighter anymore. Therefore as a general rule: attack escorts only when really needed. Be it for the boat's own safety, or b

If you're going to Kiel and can manage some extra travelling, also consider visiting the former U-2540 in Bremerhaven. See . It's a bit of a long drive (2.5 hours by car), but worth it. If you want to minimize the amount of travel per day, find a hotel in Hamburg and then make day trips to Kiel and Bremerhaven. That's what I did a number of years ago. Both locations are easily re

U-534, Type IXC40 at Birkenhead (albeit in a not exactly enjoyable shape) With some freedom of interpretation, one could also add Vesikko, a prototype IIA at Helsinki. She is of the same basic design as German U-boats and she did fight on German side in WW-II, as Germany and Finland were allies, so... See

By coincidence, I've spotted something odd on the site with respect to Dietrich Schöneboom: On his profile page, it is stated that he received the knights cross on October 20, 1943 and also that he died at sea the day after on October 21. So far, so plausible. But his profile also has a formal portrait picture of him wearing the decoration, whereas the page about his boat U-431 states th

He didn't identify it as UC14. He found UC14 some time ago and now has found another boat that is still to be identified. That's the whole idea of the post.
