I'm also interested in the last patrol of this boat. She's mentioned in Werner's Iron Coffins as being the last boat in line, in the suicidal sortie against the invasion fleet. She was bombed, but survived, and turned back. Then in The U-Boat War, Buchheim says he saw her in Brest afterwards, looking like "a floating junkheap." She's listed here are having bee

I had gotten the same rumor about the lifeboats being machine-gunned from a book that a member of the Ship Model Society of New Jersey brought to their meeting last night. I remarked that if it was true, it was most unusual. I did not get the name of the book, but will attempt to do so

If you search "Groth" on this forum, you'll find some discussion of his character. As I recall, Buchheim's portrayal is said to be pretty accurate.

Buchheim said he looked more like a liner captain than a dashing U-boat commander. Also said that he looked ten years older than he was-- which, if you take a look at Buchheim's photos in U-Boat War, you'll see that he did!

Veidt as a U-boat commander? How absolutely wonderful. The crew of the U-96 liked to call the Chief "Rasputin" because of his resemblance to Veidt in that role!

Yep, definitely Fuji. It's a very nice piece, quality ship portrait. Hope it sells well.

A painting on silk would have been done in the Orient, and one with Mount Fuji is almost certainly Japanese

Thanks, Captain George. I'd forgotten to try to find it today, since we were understaffed, and I'd gotten four hours sleep the night before.

I'll be at work tomorrow, and see what I can find. Probably the good old Readers Guide to Periodical Literature will nail it for me.

Yep, and thank you, but that's not what I need. Has anyone got the printed music to the song? I'd like to get it for our collection of World War II sheet music at the library where I work.

12. Re: U96
U-96 was bombed at Wilhelmshaven and sunk there. I think the wreck was later scrapped. All gone, nothing left. Sorry!

It looks like they've put up a very good exhibit. One concern-- is conservation of the hull sections an ongoing project? I realize that she'll never look as clean as U-505, having spent considerable time under water. However it appears that a little more might be done there.

I would like to have the sheet music to this famous little number for my library's collection of war songs. While the lyrics are widely available, and there are plenty of MP3's posted, the printed music seems a bit elusive. If any of you have it as printed music, a scan would be most welcome.

A short time after Das Boot came out in the USA, a humorous tribute to the film appeared just before the bridge that leads to New Jersey Transit's Hoboken tunnels. There is a very old iron tank near the tracks, which someone-- possibly NJT employees-- decorated as a funny little submarine. It has a periscope and a deck gun, constructed out of pipes and various bits of junk, and at one poin

Steven, there was one available a year and some months ago, but it has already been claimed-- the U-534. Beyond that, about the only way you're going to get one is to raise it from the ocean. Good luck. PatW

The script was published in 1981. Amazon.com lists it, but it's out of print and there are no copies available from second hand dealers. I suggest that you get the Lothar-Gunther Buchheim novel that the movie is based on. You'll find it a good read that you won't get tired of. The book has more humor than the movie, and you'll also discover that the depth charge sce
