Sunk 20 Aug 1944 in the North Atlantic south-east of Newfoundland, in position 42.20N, 51.39W, by depth charges and rockets from 3 Avenger and 2 Wildcat aircraft (VC-42) of the US escort carrier USS Bogue. 18 dead and 41 survivors.

General notes on this boat

20 Aug 1944. U-1229 was on a mission to land an agent, Oskar Mantel, in the Gulf of Maine but the boat was sunk on the outbound route. Mantel was among the survivors.

Men lost from U-boats

Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-1229 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
