In October of 1942 off the coast of the Congo U-126 (Lieutenant-Commander Bauer) sprang a leak in the upper deck torpedo tube which plunged the boat very swiftly into the depths. The boat plunged to a depth of 750 feet. According to Carl Doenitz, this was the greatest depth ever achieved by a Type IXC without a collapse of the hull which was under a water pressure of 336 lb. per sq.in.
