They used it to check if potential recruit\'s hips were narrow enough to fit through the hatch of a U-Boat.....
Seriously, though...It\'s an instrument used for checking the verticle height of objects....I would suppose that if the vertical height, say, a mast-tip was known, you could figure out distance....
