Further efforts to find my original source haven’t helped: it was some time ago and my system of cross referencing has improved greatly since then. It may be pointless to tell until I find the source, but the way I remember it, the liaison officer was on an operational boat, and it seemed that the reason for his presence was to do with an all out effort to get a convoy through. I am almost certain that the information was contained in a report on the German efforts to supply fuel to North Africa and that the officer was communicating with Salonika, which narrows down the time. I realise now that if there was such an assignment, the officer would either have had to do the entire encryption and receiving/transmitting process himself or he was accompanied on the sub by a rating or two: otherwise he may as well have used the Italian facilities. I will pass the source on when it surfaces.
