You don't say when your grandfather served onboard 'Mermaid' - the name has been a popular one and there have been several of that name; I presume the one that served in WW2, if so then :
MERMAID - a 'modified 'Black Swan'' class sloop.
1475/1925 tons 299ft x 38ft
two boilers/two shafts/geared turbines:4,300 shp = 19 knots
armed: 3 x twin 4 in, 4 x twin 20mm, 2 x single 20mm; depth charges
She was ordered in Feb. 1942 from Denny's of Dumbarton, being launched 11 Nov. 1943 and entered service in May 1944. She saw war service as a convoy escort, including to Russia. Post-war I regret I have little details of her service. She was sold to the West German navy in May 1959 and continued to serve with them until scrapped in1990.</HTML>
