It's possible, but I've no means of checking right now, that A was used earlier on, when carriers were regarded as auxiliaries (that's why Ark Royals II, III & IV used a diamond-shaped crest - ARII was an auxiliary, and the existing crest was re-used. I'm unsure if ARV uses that, or a round one).</HTML>
