Have you tried writing to the National Archives [www.archives.gov] ?
They should have reports on this incident and even his military service record. Just be patient as it can take several weeks for a response.
You say he shows as listed as dying on the USS Chester on October 20, 1942, which coincides nicely with the information Robert found, so I'm not clear how much more detail you are looking for, just confirmation he was one of the casualties or the circumstances of his loss.
After the National Archives, another possible source of information are crew members that have survived. A quick search of the ship found the following site that appears to have several men listed that served during 1942:
[www.hullnumber.com]
No guarantee that any of them might know your Great Uncle since it was a large ship, but they may be able to fill in some details about the attack.
