Hi Peter,
in his books "Sechs Jahre U-Boot-Fahrten" and "Wir jagten Panzerkreuzer" Spieß mentioned that he saw a trawler and two destroyers alongside the "Calgarian". He feared that the torpedoes could hit one of these ships and so he adjusted the depth setting of the torpedoes to 5 and 6 metres to make sure that they went under these ships. Then he finished off the "Calgarian" and escaped submerged. Two explosions were heard. He wasn't aware that he eventually sank the trawler. He thought that both torpedoes had struck the "Calgarian".
