Torpedo jumped over the boat?

I read in the book 'Ritter der Tiefe' by Lowell Thomas that von Arnauld's U-35 was attacked by an allied submarine from a very closy range. The first torpedo jumped over the U-35(!?!), the second was set to deep and other torpedow missed.
Is it true?
I didn't believe it at the beggining but I have just read the autobiography of polish commander of polish destroyed, who in early 20s was taking submarine training in France. One of his intructors was Captaine de Corvette Bukhard who claimed to miss german u-boot from a very close range because one of torpedoes jump over the u-boot. The books says that this accident changed seriously Bukhard's personality, he never smiled since then...
