Circe came shortly after midniht in sight of U 47. In a first attack the AH-torpedo missed, the commander of U47, LSL Hugo von Seyffertitz underestimated the distance. One hour later Circe again came in sight, U47 circled around her to get her in the moonlight. At 03:12 U47 fired a torpedo that struck the french boat midships.
The AH-boat picked up one survivor, the second officer FL Eugen de Lepereye. He reported later, that the french boat haden`t noticed the first attack. He was the only survivor, because he stood on the conning tower, when the detonation blew him overboard.
