To take photos was very common at that time, as it is today with digital cameras or photo-mobilphones. So it was on the submarines. And often survivors were taken photos of. You can find such photos in nearly every old book of submarine warfare of the First World War, mostly captains taken prisoner but also survivors in lifeboats being torn by German U-Boats near the coast or near a next ship.
