A U-class boat really isn't a possibility in this case though. They stopped going through Dover in early March 1917 (U 85 was nominally the last but that's an entirely different issue) and didn't resume in any quantity before September 1917. (U 49 aborted a patrol through Dover in April 1917.) So it would seem that it's UB 31 or having to seriously think about it being UB 39...

And while we're on sailing vessel attacks, there's also the Katie Cluett, a British s/v of 136 grt towed in about being attacked by gunfire on May 6, 1917 28 miles NWxN of Dieppe. The eastern English Channel location and date suggests a Flanders boat in transit to/from its patrol area. UB 38 would seem most likely (got her KTB, will check it if no one beats me to it) and failing that UC 26 or UB 39.
