A bit of a disappointment to discover two thirds the way though that I was reading a novel and not the diary it purported to be.

My impressions of Von Shenk were that he was insufferably arrogant - the ultimate aristocratic snob, but some of the accounts of submarine warfare especially the part in the Fair Isle Gap were very involving. By the time I came to the last words of Zoe the game was up as far as the book being what it purported to be.

Recently read Wolfgang Hirshfeld's book, The Secret Diary of a U-boat NCO

That was a great read indeed. Really enjoyed that one.
