UC 61 found : Help with UC 61 POWs

Hello

Well re-found really - a few plates of UC 61 have risen again this summer above the sand on the beach where she stranded 26 July 1917 at Wissant south of Calais. In July, UC 61 was daily surrounded by holidaymakers.

My main question concerns tracking down the prison camps which held the captured crew of UC-61 from 1917-20. I have several lists from the German military archives at Freiburg. Some of the men were sent to named camps, for instance, the boat's commander Georg Gerth was sent to Boyardville and, after an abortive escape attempt, to Carcassonne in 1918.

However, the destinations of most of the men is limited to the number of their Gefangenenkompanie (POW company). I plan to visit the French military archive at Vincennes next month, in part to try to identify the whereabouts of the numbered companies, but wondered whether, first, any Forum members could help with research directions (having travelled a similar path) or, indeed, have had any success visiting Vincennes; I am having difficulty establishing a useful rapport? I think I have exhausted the International Red Cross records.

The Gefangenenkompanie numbers are 13, 25, 84, 90, S.A.2, and S.A.5.

Thank you.
Chris Heal
