Hi Freddy,
Thanks for the reply, like you I thought that might be the case. The reason I asked the question was that in a local antique shop, I found a well made trench/ hunting knife with a blade length of about 3.5"-4" long with wooden handle. This being typical of the type of knives carried by German soldiers during WW1.
On the handle of this knife is stamped 'U67' implying a U boat connection. This stamp has been on the handle for a long time and if you were going to augment an item to increase it's value then I think that you would stamp something that is likely to have come off a U boat rather than something that is unlikely to have come off a U boat.
I look forward to your thoughts on this.
