Conning tower numbers?

<HTML>Hello Joe,
On that film, Admiral Donitz was watching a few U-boats
go by (for want of a better term!) and they had bloody big
numbers painted white, on the conning tower.
I thought they did not paint numbers
on U-boats. Were these training boats?</HTML>
