Re-assigned to Safety?

<HTML>Sorry if this is a stupid question, but... is it true that several u-boat aces were re-assigned to training or administrative duties to prevent their loss in combat? Somehow I got the impression that this happened to help protect morale. Is this true? If so, who were the first to get this special re-assignment and when?
