If no one know here, I would recommend contacting the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago where the U-505 is kept. Unfortunately the curator of the U-505 restoration project, Keith Gill, is no longer with the museum, but perhaps someone else there can help.
I recall reading many posts by Keith during the restoration in which he discusses both interior and exterior treatments.
They went to great lengths (I believe greater than the exhibits you mentioned)to make everything as authentic as possible, right down to the knobs on the valves.
