The penninsula shares the name of the town at its tip -- usually identified by the Polish spelling \"Hel\" on contemporary maps. The naval base had been used by the Poles at the tip of their Baltic corridor between the world wars. It also served as the base for four U-boats operating as the 18th flotilla from January through March 1945. Finally, the Soviet army was, of course, advancing westerly, rather easterly, along the Baltic coast during that period. I must be suffering from dyslexia. =AL=</HTML>
