Prien at Scapa Flow was dramatic, and there were several captains who had very large kills later (numerically-wise), but I would offer Fritz Julius Lemp.
Herr Lemp, through compassion for his crew, ordered all to abandon ship when a collision was emminent. The Brit ship turned away only at the last moment, and the Enigma machine was recovered (3-rotor). The Brits \"broke\' the code at this time only thru Lemp\'s humanitarianism for his men.
A dramatic and vitally important U-boat battle.
