U-Boat code names and sponsoring cities

<HTML>Having an interest in the history of the WWII era U-Boats, I very recently found
out that they were issued codenames and a number of the vessels were
sponsored by various German cities.
Can anyone provide me with any information about this. it is an interesting
and it seems neglected part of the history of the U-Boats.
