<HTML>Hi J.G Wilson
I\'ll just was reading your post in regards to U-521 & PC 565!
I found it very interesting..!
U-521 sunk on 2/6/1943, SW of Delaware Bay (37*43\' N 73*16\' W)
On 5/5/43 the U-boat left for U.S waters. The boat was sighted on the
31st by a Norfolk-base aircraft 225 miles off Cape Hatteras. U-521 then
dived and moved off in a northwesterly direction. On 1/6/43 she sighted
a NG convoy, enroute from New York to Guantanamo.
On the 2nd June one of the escort, the USN patrol craft PC 565 under
the command by Lt W.T.Flynn, obtained a contact on U-521 and close
on to the U-boat, apparently undetected. 5 depth charges were dropped
causing severe damage. U-521 surfaced and PC 565 open fire and
moved in to ram U-521.. The commander of U-521 ( KL Bargsten) who
had come up to the conning tower immediately his boat surface was
the only survivor. The crew was ordered to abandon ship but did not
have time to do so before U-521 sank, with her destruction so rapidly
completed by more D/C from PC 565. 51 of the boat\'s crew were lost.
