Gun duels with shore establishments?

<HTML>On a recent trip to Newcastle (NSW, Australia) I visited Fort Scratchley, which holds the distinction of the only Australian coastal defence site to engage the enemy during WW2 (Darwin was attacked by air).

The Japanese submarine I-21, on it\'s way north from the attack on Sydney harbour decided to try it\'s luck on the shipyards and steelworks of Newcastle.

The engagement was pretty non-conclusive - bad fuses meant that only two of the Japanese shells (manufactured in Britain) exploded and the submarine got away without damage.

Back to topic - I understand that several of the UBoats in the Carribean shelled oil refineries, but was this worth doing, and did it happen often?

Purely from doing the numbers it seems a pretty uneven contest between a submarine\'s single 8.8cm gun against a battery of 6 or 8 inch coastal guns with all the likelihood of having air-support available.
