<HTML>Hi Sean, Kurt,
Also remember reading about a Japanese sub...can\'t remember the designation though....which shelled an American fort in Oregon. The fort returned fire I believe.
This sub also has the distinction of launching two air attacks on the continental US. The idea of these attacks was to drop incendiary bombs in the Oregon forests and start a huge forest fire. Fortunately for Oregon, these attacks were carried out during the wet season and did little more than burn a few trees.
If I remember correctly, the sub also sank one or two ships off our coast and then returned home to Japan. On the way home it encountered two Russian subs, heading to the US for some sort of visit. Mistaking the subs for Americans, the Japanese commander attacked and sank one of them. The Japanese made no public claim of this success when they learned it was a Soviet boat--for obvious reasons.
A pretty active patrol for that I-boat. Sorry I can\'t remember the designation...will try to look it up. I believe I read the story in the Journal of Military History.
