<HTML>You seem unable to objectively discuss U-boat topics. Might I suggest you avoid this forum if you think it might cause you a stroke? This forum is filled with friends of the U-boatwaffe, and you\'ll rarely hear anything but praise for these men who didn\'t want war, but simply had to go out and do their duty like soldiers of any country must.
The order to not pick up survivors is because there was not the room or provisions in a U-boat to accomodate them. Still, there are many instances of U-boats assisting survivors, when Allied escorts or aircraft were not around to sink them. Doenitz fought a clean war, and apparently the Nuremberg tribunal agreed, as he was given the lightest sentence of anyone at the first round of trials. Many Allied naval commanders then and today also agree Doenitz fought a clean war.
Hitler himself is a different subject. Don\'t tie Nazi policies to the U-boat arm--they are completely different topics.
U-boats took out legitimate military targets. Read about Hardegen and the Gulf America, when he avoided shelling her from sea-side to avoid missing and hitting innocent civilians on shore. Or Hartenstein and the survivors he attempted to assist until he was chased off by an American aircraft. Instances of compassion by U-boat crews are very, very numerous.
If you want to discuss wanton destruction just for the sake of butchery, read about Britain\'s \"Bomber\" Harris, head of strategic bombing. His policy was to destroy cities and people just for the terror aspect, in the hopes the massive destruction of non-military targets would frighten the Germans into surrendering. Read about the fire-bombing of Dresden, another non-miltary target the Allies put to the torch just to terrorize the populace. The death toll in Dresden rivals even Hiroshima and Nagasaki. </HTML>
