<HTML>Steve:
Following the explosion of the UCKERMARK in Yokohama with the associated loss of the THOR and the sinking of the MICHEL, the Kriegsmarine found itself with many survivors ashore in Japan. These people were assigned to positions in Japan itself, also Penang, Singapore, Batavia, and Soerabaja. From these latter bases, men were assigned to vessels such as the CHARLOTTE SCHLIEMAN, WESERLAND, RHAKOTIS, and RIO GRANDE, among others. What these fellows didn\'t want, as per my prior post, was to be sent to the Uit-24 or the Uit-24, or any of the \"Monsoon\" boats being returned to Europe.
You do realize, don\'t you, that I have attended at least six \"Nippon Gruppe\" meetings in Germany over the past thirteen years. Many of the men who attend are fluent in English, and the person who I quoted speaks, because he has not lived in Germany for fifty years, better English than he does German!
Cordially.
George.
