U-156 & Kplt. Hartenstein
Date: July 14, 2001 08:32PM

<HTML>Wondered if everyone knew of Hartenstein\'s gallant effort to save hundreds of passengers from a sunken freighter by tying up the several lifeboats from this ship and connecting these lifeboats to his U-156. Hartenstein even had white sheets draped over his deck guns with the \"Red Cross\" emblem showing.

Apparently a bomber saw this and decided to strafe U-156 and Hartenstein had to cut loose the lifeboats he was pulling and dive the obat to save it and his crew.

It\'s a great story and one that is on my video of Uboats. The person telling the story is an Englishman I believe who credits Hartenstein with saving his life.

Does anyone know the particulars about Hartenstein? All I know is that the mission after this event occured, U-156 was sunk with all hands.

Thanks for any information on Hartenstein.
