Hi Neil,
I don’t have any details on the durability of the explosive used in the warheads or the detonators but it was changed/improved over the course of the war like most everything else. No telling what they used at the end of the war with everything in short supply. Also I am guessing that the depth/temperature might even have something to do with it after all these years.
You might well find two torpedoes on the same U-boat with different explosive charges depending on their types and when the torpedoes/detonators were manufactured. Any remaining torpedoes & detonators were turned in after a war patrol and reissued to the next U-boat so there could be a mix of old & new on the same boat.
If you read German you might find something about what was used in the various types of warheads and detonators in:
Rössler, Eberhard. Die Torpedos der Deutschen U-Boote. Germany: Verlag E. S. Mittler & Sohn GmbH, 2005. ISBN: 3-8132-0742-7. Copyright: Verlag E. S. Mittler & Sohn GmbH, 2005.
Lastly, I know there will be a lot of interest in your paper here on the forum when you have finished it so please don’t forget us (-:
