Hess claimed the sinking of a ship in the harbour of Kirkenes on 9 February 1945. The Norwegian freighter Idefjord was missed by 30 metres and the torpedo detonated against the pier.

Personally, I think it was a difficult and very skillful attack and deserved the RK for this action.
