<HTML>Rodrigo,
Identifing an U-boat wreck can be very difficult. The basics:
1. Compare the location to known U-boat loss sites. For the Middle and South Atlantic, see [www.uboat.net] which will link you to information on the specific boats as well. Of course, our understanding could be off with another boat lost in the area that no one knew about (U 869 is the classic example).
2. Figure out what type of U-boat it is based on the boat\'s general characteristics. This may narrow down the list of possibilities. (Of course, not all sunken submarines are German...)
3. It\'s possible to roughly date a WWII U-boat wreck by examining certain external details - details of the bridge, anti-aircraft armament, whether a schnorchel was fitted etc.
4. You might luck out and find an emblem on the conning tower. Or not. Numbers would generally not be carried.
There\'s an excellent write up on identifing the U 869 at [WWW.mossmanscubaventures.com]
BTW, is there a specific wreck you are trying to identify or is this a theoritical question?
Best wishes,
Michael
