Actually, a surprising number of the top commanders survived the war. Success was usually rewarded with a promotion to a staff job. Definition does matter here - you reasonably can justify three different answers for the top scoring that survived the (does being a POW count? How about being killed four days after the war ended?)

There\'s a list of all Knight\'s Cross winners on this site at [www.uboat.net] with a notation for those that did not survive the war. If you commare this list to teh most successful at [www.uboat.net] you\'ll quickly get your answer.
