Hi Billy
The report of the NOIC Stornoway concerning the loss of ROTORUA and the RoP of HMS VARANGA can be found in ADM 199/142. These documents were probably used as a source by Tennent as they list the numbers of survivors picked up by each trawler, but it is also mentioned that one of the 49 men picked up by HMS EBOR WYKE subsequently died (AB Otway). It appears that the correct number of survivors is 107 and there were 23 casualties. As a side note, the officer making the survivors statement was the 4th officer and not the 4th engineer.
However, no prisoners are mentioned in any German or British primary source so I concur with your finding to disregard the remark about two prisoners taken from this ship. It seems to me that Tennant mixed up some things here, because he does not mention the two prisoners taken from EMPIRE AVOCET further down on page 223 in his book.
I will correct our page about ROTORUA accordingly this weekend.
Best regards
Rainer
