Mystery U-Boat from the 60's

Greetings. Newbie here, and I have a query.

When I was a kid in the 60's, I recall a recurring story in the Boston Globe, no doubt syndicated, about a U-Boat that was floating about 20 feet or so below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, or the Carribean Sea. It would reappear every year or so, drifting around below the surface, seemingly "stuck" at that depth.

Speculation was that it had been depth-charged, and unable to surface.

I happened upon your website on an unrelated post, so I figured I'd ask.

So....anybody know about this mystery craft?
