<HTML>According to Red Cross statutes, theoretically a POW should get paid twice: by his Home Country and by his Captors, but actually he gets nothing. When one uniformed person is on the wrong side of a barbed wire fence it is dangerous to provide him with local currency as this could help him to escape. He usually gets \"coupons\" which are useless outside but let him buy some comfort goods inside the camp if available. His family at home gets most of his pay. When the prisoner is released a small amount of money is given to him.
That is a general statement, because in WW2 not all the fighting Countries were members of the Red Cross Organisation or followed her prescriptions.
A general survey about how POWs were manned in different Countries during WW2 is very interesting but a little off-topic.
