RE: P.O.W. - Pay

German POW’s in camps in the U.S. were paid for their work by the U.S. government ($.80 per day in coupons that could be spent in the canteen/PX). See [www.tsha.utexas.edu] for a brief explanation of the Texas POW camps.
As a side note, one of the POW camps was located in Galveston, Texas where my family lived at the time. My aunt was furious with the government over the camp. The beach opposite the camp was declared off limits to civilians because of the camp. The POW’s swam there and it had been my aunt’s favorite swimming spot!
The land the camp was on was sold to a developer after the war (and after the prisoners were sent back to Europe). When my uncle returned from the war in the Pacific he bought a lot from the developer, built a house on it and moved in. My aunt (now 89) still lives in that house. It is located where the German POW barracks were.
Before they moved to Galveston, my family had lived in Hearne, Texas and there was a POW camp there too. It was bigger than the camp at Galveston. For information on that camp see [nautarch.tamu.edu]. There are a number of good photos of the camp and it’s prisoners at that site. Click on “Tour Camp 1944â€. You will see a layout of the camp. Click on each of the red dots on the camp layout to see the corresponding photos.
