<HTML>I suspect that a modern torpedo would do quite well against a modern merchant ship.
Modern torpedoes are very accurate. With a torpedo such as the American ADCAP, it is not a question of hitting the ship, but what part of the ship do you want to hit? Do you want to break it\'s back or just blow the screw off her.
Improved engineering has allowed ships to get larger, but not necessarly stronger. Modern ship design tends to reduce strength to the minimum needed in favor of more cargo. In the old days, the engineers were not as good at computing needed strength, so they just made it stout.
