I must correct myself - of course in the inclinometer there is no air-bubble (as the indicating medium), but water column level. So the above sentence should be as follows:

I would like to add, when you could need to know, how much the bow/stern is below/above the keel:

1. When you are deep, the boat is bow/stern heavy (Vorlastig/Achterlastig) and you need to blow all ballast tanks. In normal situation, when the boat is in horizontal position, all ballast tanks are blown with the air under the same pressure.
However, when the boat is (let's say) bow heavy, the bow ballast tank is deeper than stern ballast tank. When blowing, you have to adjust pressure of air admitted to each tank accordingly to depth. If not, all air will flow to the ballast tank at lesser depth, that is to the stern tank. It will be blown, and the stern will start going even higher, and the boat will be even more bow heavy (and that is not what you want to). Knowing the difference in the depth of the bow and stern, you can adjust the pressure of air admitted to each tank.

2. When you are at periscope depth, if you do not want to get bow or stern breaking the surface, you know, that you can not exceed Achterlastig 12 degrees and Vorlastig 11 degrees.
