Medals earned during world war 2

I have a simple questions with maybe a not so simple answer. I've seen where many U Boat commanders who survived the war also rejoined the German Navy after the war. My question is this. Were they able to wear their Medals on their uniform they had earned during the war. IE the Iron Cross and such. Thank you for the answer:)
