Das Boot - U96 interior

Watching "Das Boot" I wounder why the interrior of the boat is so dark. Is this realistic as the real boat, or just a movie-trick? I know the "U995" has a grey paint under and a white interrior above. In the movie the engine compartment was something they found on a scrapheap. Does anyone know where this came from?
