That thing on the bow?

Hi all,

I'm new here and feel pretty sure this is going to sound like a silly question, but I've looked and looked and can't find an answer to this:
What is that jagged thing called on the bow of some U-boats, what was it used for (cutting through submarine nets?), when was it issued, and when was it discontinued?

In preparation for Silent Hunter II, I'm building two Heller 1/400 kits of a Type VIIC, one early war and one mid. The model doesn't seem to have that jagged thing, but I think most early war boats had one, so I thought I would add it. But before doing so, I wanted to make sure it was appropriate.

Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
