Hi Ray,
Unlike WW1 the boats were directed by HQ in offshore convoy battles etc. Much less individual hunting close inshore in WW2.
Also large net and mine barrages from WW1 were relatively ineffective and not deployed in WW2. The coastal sub became the off shore marauder. Thus, even the blockheads at the Marine Bau Amt (equiv. to BUSHIPS) realized lower and upper netcutter were superfluous. Also at the same time the superheavy cables were replaced by smaller diam. antennae wires. However, the deflectors for the fore and aft hydroplanes were kept, cause they prevented damages and fouling by flotsam and seaweed etc. Rgds, RB
