Hi Max, Jeff and Joe,
If you guys are absolutely certain that these somewhat enlarged rods ending up at thebottom of the rudderstock are there to support the rudders, I will not stand corrected with reluctance maintain a lot of doubt about your explanations. I always thought (and I do not recall, which of my elderly Uboat friends told me so decades ago) ,that this contraption with the big strut under the aftship keelson is a left-over from the design, which included the fwd netcutters. I.e: the thinking went, if the sub broke a big enough hole in the net, they did not want her to get hung up on the screws and the rudders once 7/8 through the hole. That is, why I always referred to these things as propeller guards. When the fwd. cutters were discontinued in '41inertia kept building the rear part, which added a lot of turbulance (speak noise). I guess the Norwegians cut away that whole mess on U995. Joe, I sincely doubt you had tip flutter on the rudders at hard over on full ahead. Take a second look at U995's pics on this site. The is a closeup shot showing clearly how strongly the were built. Cheers guys, RB
