Hi Guys,
I doug around my Uboat drawings and came across a detailed drawing of the rudders and the rods etc. Armed nowadays with a well sized magnifying glass (used to do without) and found the smoking gun. The drawing was subtitled: Hauptruder u. Abweiserstangen (translation: Main Rudders and Deflector Rods).
So the purpose was clearly to keep the rudders from being fouled. RB
