XVIII and XXI

The XXI was based on the hull of the XVIII. The XVIII was a big Walter boat intended for high seas use, but as we know, the Walter drive was never adopted. The XVIII was to have two 6,000 HP Walter turbines which were to give it a top speed of 24 knots for 270 NM. Diesel power was two 2,000 HP MWM RS 12 V 26/34a motors. Electric power was two small creep motors.

The original idea for the electroboat concept came in winter 42/43 to Dipl. Ing. Heep, who was on loan to the Walter project as of Nov. 1942. He noted the slow progress of the Walter turbine project and asked himself what would happen if one used the extra space for the hydrogen peroxide tank to install extra batteries. He brought the idea to Oelfken who looked at it seriously in May 1943. The idea went through various channels until it got to Doenitz on June 19, 1943. Doenitz accepted the concept as a replacement for the Type IX and started the final design process for the Type XXI.
