Depth charges have lethal radiuses in the tens of feet, but can cause some damage at ranges of hundreds of feet. This varies somewhat according to depth, the size of the charge, the explosive used, and the strength of the submarine\'s hull (and other factors, I\'m sure).

If you are into the math, the effective radius of a charge should increase in proportion to the square root of the mass of the charge, all other conditions being equal.

The hedgehog detonates on contact, so the distance to the hull is zero. A 32-pound charge would have a lethal radius of maybe a few feet, so detonating on contact is close enough to work nicely. The same applies to the relatively small warhead on a Fido.
