Re Squid,

The escort did not \'run over\' the U-boat when using squid..it would \'stand off\' and lob the squid projectiles over the bow at the u-boat.It would stay about 500yrds
from the u-boats position and use the sword and type Q attachments to its sonar
(the first \'attck sonar\' ever developed) to determine the u-boats depth and bearing
with great accuracy.This data was fed automatically into to squid depth bombs
just before they were fired.The RN had such faith in the Squid system that the
late war Corvettes (the Castle class) and the Firgates (River and Loch classes) have virtually no depth charge racks on their sterns...just 1 or 2 squids mounted
forward.
